The sun has finally made an appearance which can only mean one thing. It’s time to ditch those comfy jumpers, warm winter casseroles and cosy nights in and get out there to enjoy the Great British summer (however long or short it is). But whether you’re planning a road trip with the girls or you’re whisking the kids off to the beach, set five minutes aside to make sure your car is in tip-top condition. Here’s how, with our summer car checks.

Ideally, you should keep an eye on your oil at least once month but it’s essential to check it out before a long journey as it keeps your engine running smoothly. Ensure that the engine is cold and you are parked on a fairly level surafce, and use the dipstick to check that the oil falls between the two markers.
Water Coolant Levels
This is an important one because it’s used to stop the engine overheating. Again, ensure that the engine is cold before running the check.
Check the general condition of the tyres for wear, cuts or slashes. Also, make sure that the tread is at least 1.6mm. Any lower than this, and the car isn’t safe to drive. Keep in mind that it’s a legal requirement so it’s really important to check that tread – there’s nothing like a fine from the boys in blue to ruin your trip. Before your journey, also ensure that you’ve taken a look at where your spare tyre is located and don’t forget to check the condition too.
Check that they are clean and that they all work.
While making the checks, it’s also a good idea to refer to your handbook or manual.
It’s also a good idea to pack the following
- Jackets or warmer clothing, if you’re stuck later at night
- First Aid Kit
- Warning Triangle
- Toolkit (just in case you breakdown and are able to fix anything)
Breaking down not only spoils your plans but it can be pretty costly too. These checks only take a few minutes and can save a lot of time and money later on. So, whether you’re venturing to Bognor or Brittany, have a great time. And don’t forget the petrol!
